California school discipline bills discussed by legislators

Gavel and a book

Several bills written to clarify and reform California laws governing school discipline received a hearing in Sacramento.

The bills drew varying levels of support from the California School Boards Association (CSBA) and the Association of California School Administrators (ACSA). Two such bills were Senate Bill (SB) 1088, which was supported, and Assembly Bill 2242, which was not.

Under SB 1088, schools must give multiple chances for expelled students to be readmitted by proving their rehabilitation is complete, but only if formally requested by the student or parent.

AB 2242 removes "Willful Defiance" as grounds for suspension. It was opposed because it does not provide an alternative "catch all" category for suspensions or provide funding for training teachers to deal with defiant students.
